Elaine
Perlov's clothing offers a woman modern, sculptural options to construct
a new outfit each day according to her latest need or whim. The
Elaine Perlov client is a sleek urban dresser, a creative participant
in the clothes, a woman who understands that "economy of form" can
be the most evocative.
When Elaine's studies in Japanese art history brought her to Japan
during college, she was moved and changed by the beauty and simplicity
of the forms she encountered. Ultimately she would look to traditional
Japanese architecture for inspiration in creating her clothing line
some ten years later. "I was struck by the modular
elements in a traditional Japanese residence, where a room could
be created or recreated with sliding doors and folding screens,"
Elaine recalls. "When building a new Collection, I continue to conceive
of each piece of clothing as a similarly modular and changeable
element of a whole. I want to make each piece versatile, economical
and useful." As such, her Collections of clothing, t-shirts and
accessories are composed of simple, sculptural pieces that can be
layered and mix-matched in numerous ways.
The unique aspect of the line is its modular quality, highlighted
in versatile pairings of pattern and texture that the wearer adjust
to compose new outfits each day. Some pieces are reversible, like
the ever-popular Dynasty
2000 Wrap in Chinese silk brocade. Other pieces, like the
utilitarian Denim Dress,
can be worn as everyday uniform, but with different layers or accessories
to change the look. With its 31-inch covered zipper, this piece
can be worn as a dress, layered over pants, or open as a jacket,
and is one of Elaine's personal favorites.
Each season, the new Collection evolves from the previous, making
it easy for the wearer to freshen up her outfits with just a few
new elements. Because the line is item-based, it is ideal both for
boutiques who want to show a Mini-Collection, and for the woman
who wants to build her designer wardrobe gradually. In each piece,
the emphasis is on surface texture, fabric and fit. Our private
and online clients return each season for the flattering fit and
the personalized service.

Elaine Perlov was born in New Jersey in 1969 and spent her early
years painting, drawing and making things most moments of the day.
She studied Cubist painting at the Montclair Art Museum and was
invited to become an assistant art teacher there at the young age
of 13. In college, Elaine focused on art history, and graduated
magna cum laude from Amherst College in 1991 with
a B.A. degree in Japanese Art History and English, and wrote an
honors thesis on Ito Jakuchu, an eccentric painter of the 18th century.
Her research brought her to Japan, and it was there that her aesthetic
sense was transformed. The simplicity and restraint of the tea ceremony,
the quiet abstraction of Zen gardens, the bold geometric shapes
of decorative screen painting and lacquer would later shape her
clothing and accessories design.
While working at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, as a Japanese
art curatorial intern, Elaine invented (and copyrighted) a hat design
in her spare time. She named it the IMMORTAL COIL. Elaine sculpted
the hat from galvanized steel which she hand-coiled, shaped to her
head and wrapped it in fabric. The immediate notoriety of the hats
in the press, including her own appearance in Vogue
(May 1993) gave her an unexpected success in the fashion world,
and she launched her company immediately. Over the years, Elaine
expanded the company to focus on women's modular separates -- clothing,
t-shirts and accessories -- with each piece displaying Elaine's
signature style of East-meets-West minimalism. You can find Elaine's
complete Collections on elaineperlov.com each season.
Selections from the Collections are also carried in boutiques and
specialty shops around the country, and on select online retailers.
The company is now based in New York City.
